Evidence Reports Confirm Benefits of Fish Oil
Filed Under Fish Oil Supplements, Good Health Tips | Leave a Comment
Fish oil can help reduce
deaths from heart disease,
according to new evidence
reports announced last month
by the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality
(AHRQ).
Evidence reports on the health
effects of omega-3 fatty acids
by the AHRQ-supported Evidence-
Based Practice Centers
(EPC) were sponsored by the
Office of Dietary Supplements
(ODS). ODS will work with
other NIH Institutes to develop
research agendas based on
the findings in these reports.
Five reports were released in
April, and an additional six reports
will be issued next year.
The systematic reviews of the
available literature found evidence
that long-chain omega-
3 fatty acids reduce heart attack
and other problems, related
to heart and blood vessel
disease in persons who already
have cardiovascular disease,
as well as their overall
risk for death. Although,
omega-3 fatty acids do not alter
total, HDL-, or LDLcholesterol,
evidence does
suggest that they can reduce
levels of triglycerides — a fat
in the blood that may contribute
to heart disease.
The review also found other
evidence indicating that fish oil
can help lower high blood
pressure slightly, may reduce
risk of re-blockage of the coronary
artery after angioplasty,
may increase exercise capability
among patients with
clogged arteries, and may possibly
reduce the risk of irregular
heart beats — particularly
in individuals with a recent
heart attack.
Paul Coates, Ph.D., Director
of the Office of Dietary
Supplements, said, “The
reports describe some
positive findings as well as
a number of areas where
the data are insufficient to
draw conclusions about the
efficacy and safety of
omega-3 fatty acids. The
ODS, in collaboration with
other NIH Institutes, will
use these reports to develop
appropriate research
agendas for omega-3 fatty
acids that will fill these
gaps in knowledge.â€

Bumble Bee Seafoods and Leiner Health Products Announce New Fish Oil Supplements Marketing Agreement and Joint Sales Effort.
PR Newswire
PR Newswire; 5/10/2005
North America’s Leading Seafood Brand Partners with Nation’s Largest Manufacturer of Store Brand Nutritional Supplements to Produce and Market Heart Healthy Fish Oil Capsules High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids
SAN DIEGO, May 10 /PRNewswire/ — Bumble Bee, North America’s leading branded seafood company, has announced a marketing agreement and joint sales effort with Leiner Health Products to produce and market new high quality fish oil supplements under the popular seafood brand.
The fish oil supplements — produced from a pure blend of oils from cold water deep sea fish, and high in omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids (EFAs) — will be made available to consumers under a new Bumble Bee Seafood Supplement label beginning summer 2005.
Omega-3 fatty acid benefits have been linked to improved heart health, reduced hypertension, aid in fighting autoimmune diseases, and improved mental health.
Consumers will have the choice of two Bumble Bee Seafood Supplement formulations to meet their lifestyle and dietary needs.
A premium, high-potency option will contain 1,200-milligram softgels each providing 216 milligrams of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 144 milligrams of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are both forms of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish.
The premium supplements will feature a unique vanilla scent and enteric coating designed to mask any fishy odor and aftertaste.
Consumers will also have the choice of a value priced supplement containing 1,000-milligram softgels each offering 180 milligrams of EPA and 120 milligrams of DHA.
Established in 1899, Bumble Bee produces and markets a full-line brand of seafood in the United States and Canada, including the top selling albacore tuna and salmon brands.
Leiner Health Products is America’s largest manufacturer of store brand vitamins, minerals, and supplements. The company also is a leading store brand supplier in the rapidly growing over-the-counter (OTC) market.
Bumble Bee President and Chief Executive Officer Christopher D. Lischewski commented, “We’re pleased to join with Leiner Health Products in launching a product that represents a new category of tremendous growth for Bumble Bee, capitalizing on the healthful attributes of our fish resources and offering consumers another option to increase their omega-3 intake.”
Lischewski added, “While we expect that the Bumble Bee Fish Oil supplements will be shelved in traditional locations alongside other like health products, we’re hopeful that our retail buyers will also consider shelving them in the canned seafood section to increase their availability to consumers.”
Leiner Health Products President Gale Bensussen said: “We are excited about the opportunity to work with a brand as respected and trusted as Bumble Bee. With numerous fish oil supplements in the market, consumers sometimes feel overwhelmed when trying to choose a quality product. At Leiner, quality assurance is our number one priority, which is why we manufacture all our nutritional supplements to the industry’s strictest standards. The Bumble Bee Fish Oil softgels are high quality supplements that have been manufactured to meet the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) guidelines set for purity, quality and potency.”
He continued, “The National Academy of Science recommends 1,100 milligrams of omega-3 per day for women, and 1,600 milligrams for men, to help protect against heart disease. But most consumers — even those with normal patterns of tuna consumption — do not meet that level of intake. The good news is consumers can boost their omega-3 consumption by taking the Bumble Bee Fish Oil supplements.”
According to Bensussen, the 1,200-milligram formulation has an omega-3 content that is higher than or equal to any leading brand on the market. “Each of these enteric coated softgels contains the purest and finest fish oil available. In fact, they are the only USP certified fish oil on the market,” he said.
The Bumble Bee Fish Oil supplements will be made available through mass merchandisers and club stores, as well as food and drug outlets.
